Ways to reduce spam

November 14th, 2010 admin No comments

Lets face it. We are never going to get rid of spam. But there are many thing we can do to decrease it and avoid being prone to reciveing more spam. Just follow these simple rules and you will be on the road in no time to recieving less spam.

Sign up to what you need!

This is the biggest common mistake that many people. If someone, some organization or third party requests your email address. Ask why? Ask what do they do with it. You will be more than surprised how many companies sell your address onto marketing companies.

Only signup to things that you really want. By doing this, this will limit your email address be out in the open.

Know your rights!

Any service that is based in the UK or EU by law has to give you an option to opt-out of their marketing campaigns. It is clearly made to companies that they have to give you a link at the bottom of your website.

Setup Spam Filters

All hosting accounts with Cymraeg Wales Hosting come with a free spam filter. To set it up, goto mail in Cpanel and select anti-spam. Follow the simple on screen instructions to get started. In no time you will be receiving less spam!

Getting the best out of your site!

September 24th, 2010 admin No comments

A website can be a companies marketing best friend, but it can also be a companies worst marketing enemy. Getting it right is vital!

I have listed a few examples of what your business can do to perform a spring clean and get more visitors and in turn, MORE BUSINESS!

The bottom line…

When a potential customer comes to your website you only have a few seconds to grab there attention and in essence, their business! Getting your Key Selling Points and Key Benefits over to your customer is vital in this time! To achieve this, you only need to put key important information on your site. Ask yourself the question: Does that really need to be on it? If not, SCRAP IT! Put it on another page! Do something with it, but take it off the home page! The amount of sites i see that just fill up the page with so much clutter.

Spring Clean

Everyone hates a cluttered shop. The same applies to your website! Having a cluttered website and not keeping things consistent will put off customers, it will make your website look unprofessional and additionally give your potential customers the idea that your business is also unprofessional. Make use of space! Keep everything to a theme. What i mean by this is: Same font: Headings in one font size, text in another. This applies for colour as well. Don’t have multi colour everything! Also a trend that appears to be in at the moment is having text in a very dark grey. Not black. It makes it softer for the eyes so it’s easier to read (ok, that last bit i’m just speculating. I have know idea why, but everyone seems to be doing it.)

SEO

You’ve probably heard of it and to be honest, it’s doing our head-in…. why? Every company on this earth appears to be able to offer SEO and guarantee a certain position on google. Truth of the matter, they can’t. They can help improve it, but they never guarantee you a certain position on google. I’m going to offer you some free information that are true when it comes to SEO and many companies will charge hundreds if not THOUSANDS for this information.

Site geographic location

This is one of the biggest that is mostly overlooked (even by alot of SEO companies), but it’s one of most important aspects. Your site will perform better in the country where it is hosted. Not where your users/target audience are. What i mean by this is that if your site is hosted in America, but your users are in the UK, your site will not perform as well as it would if was hosted here in the UK. If you are a Cymraeg Wales Hosting customer do not worry. Our servers are UK located so your site will perform better than if your website was hosted with another host.

Link backs

Get some high profile sites linking to your site. If you do this, it tells search engines such as google ‘hang on a tick, this site is linked by some high visitor/high profile sites, they too must be high profile’. This is what I tell all new companies. If you do this effectivily, it will not only make your site/company look more established, but it will also make your site look better established and been trading for a while. This is also a very good technique to getting your site listed quickly.

Keywords & Alt’s

I’ve heard of them, but I’m not to sure what they do? I’ve heard this so many times from designers. To make it simple, it is just a description to an image or a link. That’s all it is. If you use a design package such as Adobe Dreamweaver you will be able to add descriptions into the ALT box. Do this! Why? Simple! It adds descriptions to pages. This will improve search engines searching your site. It will also assist in the process of having something called Site Links. Site Links you say? What are they? Have you ever typed a term into google such as: Microsoft. Under first search result, it has a few links to different sections. These are called Site Links and they are a pain to get. However, if you follow a few tips and tricks they will soon appear.

When you name web pages, give them a search engine friendly name. If you want to call your page helloworld.html. Don’t call it this, but call it hello-world.html. This is a search engine friendly term. Site links only work if your site pages are logical and are easy to understand.

Keep it regular!

Another way to improve SEO is to keep your website up to date. The amount of times websites get to a decent position in google and then loose their position because their site is stagnant. Update your site once a week! Have a news section or something that will keep it up to date and this will get search engines scanning your site regularly. This will give your site a better position then other sites.

Here are just a few ideas to throw around. I will update this post as and when i come up with more ideas. So stay tuned!

All the best,

Nathaniel McInnes

B2B Mydrive System under attack

January 7th, 2010 admin No comments

The MyDrive File system for business is currently being ddos-ed  at the moment and is causing slight interruption to users trying to login. Although the drive cloud appears to be dealing with it fairly well, we would like make customers aware of this problem and ask to expect slightly longer page loading times and the odd page time out.

Our maintenance team are trying to currently block offending IP’s.

Any more news will be posted as it comes in.

It has come to our attention, that a handful of hard drives in our server cloud have failed/show signs of potentially failing soon. Although this is not effecting the cloud. We have just taken the decision to replace these hard drives. Although we do not think this will effect any sites, we would just like to make customers aware that we are doing maintenance work.

We will be carrying the work out between 11:30-14:00 BST.

If any customers do experience any down time or problems with there site, can you please email support IMMEDIATELY as what might be effecting you could be effecting other customers.

I will post a new blog post once the update has been completed.
